July 12, 1941: L.A.C. Theriault finally managed to report to Co. 28 after a rather hectic time with the police of the two major provinces. It seems that Theriault had been given 7 days leave prior to reporting from K.T.S. and had gone to Quebec City to visit his spouse. Being the adventerous type he decided to do it the hard way and return via his thumb. It was not until later that he realized how hard it would be.

Course 49 Air Observers/Navigators: Apr. 26 - August 28, 1942

Airmen of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan are weapons that will soon aid in knocking out Nazi oppression for all time, Wing Commander T. E. W. Browne, officer in charge of navigation for No. 1 Training Command, R.C.A.F., Toronto, told a class of air navigators who were graduated at No. 4 Air Observers School at Crumlin this afternoon.

"A grim phrase coined during this war is 'London can take it'. You airmen of another London can take it, I know, and give it as well," he said.

Acting as a pinch-hitter, Wing Commander Royden Foley, supervisory officer of No. 4 Air Observers' School, Crumlin, today presented wings to a graduating class of R.C.A .F. and R.A.F. air navigators. Squadron Leader (x. R. Rodgers of No. 1 Training Command, Toronto, who was scheduled to make the presentation, was insured yesterday when the aircraft that brought him from Toronto crashed while landing at No. 4 A.O.S . Although confined at the station hospital with bruises and abrasions, he will probably be able to return to Toronto within a day or two. About three-quarters of the class consisted of R.C.A.F. personnel, and R.A.F. airmen made up the balance.

Wing Commander Foley congratulated the class upon its good academic standing, and added:

"If you keep up the good work you will do all right overseas ."

He told them that the air forces of the allied nations had the edge in new aerial devices, and that this would play no small part in eventual victory against the Axis.

"You will be amazed when you see the equipment with which you will be working," he said. "In the end there will be no doubt of the successful conclusion - of this war."

Course 60 Air Bombers: Sept. 27 - November 6, 1942

Two Iarge classes of air bombers and navigators were graduated this afternoon at No. 4 Air Observers School, Crumlin. The class was made up of British, U.S. and Canadian personnel, while with three exceptions, the navigators consisted of R.A,F. airmen.

The other navigators were (J/20598) Norman W. Bradford - 410 Sqn. Corbyville, Ont., +(J/86673) Rex Harris Mitchell - 408 Sqn., Hamilton, and M.F. Morey, New Zealand.

Wings were presented by James "Jim" Crang, a member of the
civilian pilot, staff at No. 4 A.O.S ., and a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during the Iast war. He was introduced by Wing Commander Royden Foley supervisory officer of the schooI.

"These wings make you members of a fraternity of men and women ,vho have developed aviation," said Mr. Crang. "They are a passport, wherever you may go."

The speaker urged the men to use "plain horse sense" during their future career in the air. "Horse sense" was one of the essentials of success.

Howard Stanley Wright - Chief Instructor

My name is Howard Stanley Wright. You have noted the Chief Instructor of the school was Howard Wright (my father, I was named after him). My father was seconded to the RAF Ferry Command and delivered 34 bombers (mostly Lancasters) overseas. On June 10, 1945, his 35th delivery, he was ferrying a Mosquito bomber with his Navigator Jim Woodyard and they crashed somewhere near Greenland. A subsequent search never found the site of the crash or any debris. (Photo hung on honour wall at Ingersoll Legion)

Air Force Medal Citation: (No. 14 SFTS Aylmer) "Sergeant Pilot Sanderson displayed exceptional devotion to duty on 17 October 1941 when, on discovering his aircraft to be on fire, first of all ensured the safety of his pupil (LAC Leroy Means Sullivan - Co. 37) by ordering him to jump from the burning aircraft, the pupil making a successful parachute landing. The pupil being safe, Sergeant Pilot Sanderson prepared to abandon the aircraft, but seeing that the fire was diminishing, stayed with the aircraft and proceeded to carry out a successful forced landing. His action at all times during this emergency were extremely commendable. This NCO has carried out some 400 hours of instructional flying. This, together with the initiative and presence of mind displayed on the above occasion, constitute a most valuable contribution to the success of flying training at this unit." After leaving No. 14 SFTS, Sanderson was killed May 14, 1943 (10 BR Sqn.) and Sullivan was killed November 7, 1943. Sanderson was a resident of London.
